Notre Dame Tragedy

PR Connection #8 – COMM 2322 and 4333

I know everyone heard about the Notre Dame tragedy that occurred last week when Sullivan, 20, died while filming a football practice. About 12 p.m. on an unusually stormy Wednesday, Notre Dame was conducting their football practice regardless of the local advisories. Although they had practiced inside the day before during similar conditions, they resumed to business as usual and everyone was affected by this decision. Sullivan was filming the field from the top of the camera tower when the gusts began picking up to 40 and 50 mph. This college student was suddenly afraid of the reckless weather and tweeted that he was concerned for his safety. Everyone neglected to waive him down from the tower or release him from his duties which creates concern for neglect in this senseless tragedy. There are tons of questions unanswered but the subject I want to comment on is the role “twitter” plays in this situation.

Social media causes a lot of buzz for companies and situations. Everyone is given an inside glimpse at someone’s world, their everyday life. This message to twitter, whether a cry for help or a blurb of information for the world, Sullivan knew that he was in danger and turned to twitter in his last moments. Heard around the world, all the newscasters mentioned the final tweets for this college students. Even as news spread and mourning began to plague the campus, friends and family turned to twitter to also voice their sadness and send their condolences. We live in the same world of events and tragedies, but social media has transformed the way we communicate and opens a new world of expression. For Mr. Sullivan those words were sent to cyberspace, the only way we know what he was thinking moments before the tragedy struck.
